After years of taking spin classes, I decided that I’d really like to go on a real bike ride. Not having biked in many years, I thought that joining one of Avery’s group rides would be the perfect opportunity to get back in the saddle. I was not wrong. The ride was exhilarating and a lot of fun. We biked down to Coney Island, which was quite an experience for a first ride in such a long time. Avery knows his way around the roads, and can fix a flat tire in no time. He’s got it all covered!! The ride was topped off with a Nathan’s hot dog — how could you resist in Coney Island??
If you’re looking for some great exercise and fun, join one of Avery’s bike rides. You’ll be glad you did.

CyclingClinic/Introduction to Traffic Ride

I just wanted to thank you for the cycling clinic last Sunday and the Intro to Traffic ride today!  I had such a GREAT time and learned so much from both experiences.  The clinic really gave me a better understanding of what to expect while riding in the city.  As I told you, I moved here 4 years ago from Texas and have been completely intimidated by the idea of riding on the streets of NYC.  The information you provided at the clinic really clarified a lot of my questions and built my confidence.  The intro ride today helped me put that information to practical use and navigate the streets.  I have so much more confidence now….it was obvious on my ride home from Columbus Circle…I wasn’t nervous like I was this morning when I first headed out.  Thanks so much, Avery.  I look forward to many more rides with you and your groups!!!

“The ride was great! Strong riders, flexible agenda, great spirits/energy, and to-die-for milkshakes! Gorgeous beach views…and of course it was a wonderful workout! — at Maria’s Breezy Dog, 5 Rockaway Breezy Blvd., Queens.”

“ Luv it!! Avery is awesome! He makes sure you’re good to go and even gives advise on how to ride. Thank you Avery! And thank you to Jason F. for inviting me to this group!! ” ThePiermont Nite Ride!!

“Thank you so much for working with my son these past few months.  At 10 years old he was beginning to get a little chubby and you put an end to that!!!   You have gotten him to enjoy working out and exercising almost as much as he likes his video games.  Each session is catered to an activity that he wants to do that day and even when he is feeling super lazy and says he doesn’t want to go outside, you push him to work his hardest and he always comes home happy and exhausted asking when you’ll be back.   I love when he tells me we need to exercise on the weekends.  When you started working with him, he could barely ride his bike 3 miles now the highlight of his summer was doing the 18 mile bike ride that you got him ready for.   We can not thank you enough for all you have done for him.  All his exercising has increased his self esteem and confidence”.

“I contacted Avery because, at age 39, I could balance on a bicycle and go forward along a deserted country road, but I did not have the control necessary (or the confidence!) to ride in the streets of Brooklyn. Avery was very conscientious in his communication regarding scheduling, which is, of course, a must in the fast-paced world of New York. He structured a perfect lesson for me, taking into account how I process information and how quickly I integrate motor skills. He taught me how to start and stop properly (I had been doing it all wrong, and hurting myself in the process), and he gave me exercises to improve my handling of the bike. He paced the lesson perfectly, alternating drills with little lectures, which allowed me to rest when I needed it. Avery also struck an excellent balance between encouragement and honest evaluation of what I was doing.  And then, at the end of my first lesson, he said, “Now we are going to ride back to your house.” “You mean, in the street?!” I said. “That’s right,” he said. And we did! Even in the space of those few short blocks, I used every single one of the skills he taught me. I am quite certain that it would have taken me months to figure these things out on my own, even with the help of experienced friends.  I also know from experience that it is one thing to know how to do something and quite another to have worked out a method of teaching it. I am currently practicing my drills and looking forward to my next lesson.”

“Spinning has shown me the vast benefits of clipping in versus riding
with cages.  Yet I’ve been afraid of clipping in while riding
outdoors.  I’ve heard from a number of people that when they stated
biking with clips they often had mishaps which resulted with them
tipped over still clipped and writhing in pain on the ground. In a
mere hour Avery was able to teach me how to clip in and out
flawlessly.  Thanks to Avery, i can now enjoy riding my bike the way
it was meant to be.”

My words could never fully express how thankful I am that Emilia(who’s 8) has the opportunity to work with and learn from such a dedicated, patient, knowledgeable, friendly teacher.
Since she started to learn how to ride a bike, I have noticed many positive changes in her. She is more confident and has more control over her body. When she dances I can see her leaps getting higher, and she is using more leg strength. I really admire your hard work and dedication and I feel that you have done so much more than just teach Emilia how to ride a bike, and for that I will be forever grateful!  We are looking forward to her next lesson.
Wishing you all the best always,

“I used to ride a bike a lot as a child but haven’t owned a bike as an adult or ridden much since. In fact I’d seldom even ridden a bike with gears!

I was uncertain what sort of bike to purchase and where to go as well as being very unsure about riding in NYC either in the parks or on the road. I was also a complete novice regarding best use of gears.

Avery advised me on bike purchase, then guided me through the basics of bike maintenance and road craft theory moving rapidly on to practical experience in bike handling.

His patience, support and authoritative advice allowed me to quickly gain confidence and rediscover the pleasure of road-biking after 30+ years. I only wish I’d started to work with him earlier”

Thank you Avery!
